Master of Public Administration
The master of public administration (MPA) is the professional degree for those who seek leadership positions in public service. The MPA is designed to develop the skills necessary to confront society’s most important problems. Based in the theories of social science disciplines, the MPA develops each student’s knowledge and understanding of issues in public service and effective administration of public organizations, providing flexibility to the student in career choices. KU's Edwin O. Stene Master's Program in Public Administration is one of the oldest and most respected programs in the United States, with our local government leadership program dating to 1948. Our tradition of excellence in educating students at the masters’ level has been recognized by US News and World Report (2008) with a #7 ranking overall in Public Administration and a #1 ranking among public affairs programs in city management and urban policy. The School's faculty members are nationally recognized scholars and teachers, and our MPA alumni are committed to helping new graduates find fulfilling careers in public service.
In the KU MPA program, we endeavor to strengthen the provision of public services in society by preparing students for leadership and management positions in the public and nonprofit sectors. Through our coursework, we emphasize the development of abilities important to the effective and ethical management of governmental and nonprofit organizations. The curriculum is comprised of nine core courses (28 hours), three electives (9 hours), and a on- credit practicum.
The KU MPA offers two tracks. The core courses are the same across the two KU MPA programs.
- The City & County Leadership Program offers general management and leadership education with specific emphasis on local government and community building.
- The Public Service Leadership Program offers general management and leadership education preparing students to enter a variety of leadership positions in public service organizations.
